Background

Legal videography generally involves the videotaping of a deposition for use by attorneys in the discovery phase of a trial, or it may be used to perpetuate testimony of an aged or terminally-ill witness or an expert witness who may be unable to appear at the trial. By integrating a videographer with the court reporter's verbatim record, attorneys are able to handle complex litigation more efficiently as every nuance of testimony over and above the spoken word is accessible to the attorney for use at trial.

The videographer and the court reporter work in conjunction with one another at all times in the deposition. Through the use of specialized court reporting software, text and video may be synchronized, thereby enabling the court reporter to mark the record electronically and excerpt requested portions of the video easily. This capability saves judges and attorneys from spending infinite hours of time scanning videotaped testimony in search of a specific segment.

Certification

The Certified Legal Video Specialist program (CLVS), established by the National Court Reporters Association in 1983, sets the standards for competency and knowledge in the legal video industry. The CLVS program is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training (ACCET) and the Arizona Council on Education and Training (ACET).

The president of Guardian Reporting, Inc., successfully completed the intense certification process and obtained the CLVS designation in September 1998 and became our in-house videographer.
